Funding fees on a Bitget position opened with bonus margin: who pays and from where
Futures bonus margin on Bitget can open real perpetual positions, and those positions still pay or receive funding. How funding is calculated, which balance it is taken from and how to keep a promotional position from draining your own money.

A futures bonus feels like free margin, and for opening a position it largely is. But a perpetual contract does not care where its margin came from. Every funding interval, longs pay shorts or shorts pay longs depending on the rate, and the payment is based on position size, not on whether the margin was promotional. Hold a sizeable bonus-funded position for several days and funding can add up. Understanding which balance absorbs those payments, and when, is the difference between a harmless promotion and an unexpected cost to your own funds.
How funding works on a Bitget perpetual
The funding rate is shown on the contract page, usually beside the countdown to the next settlement. At each settlement, the payment equals the position value multiplied by the funding rate at that time. A positive rate means longs pay shorts; a negative rate means the reverse. Rates change between intervals, so a rate that looks small today may not stay that way. The Bitget futures page and help centre explain the settlement schedule for each contract, which can vary.
Which balance funding comes from
Bitget's promotion terms decide how bonus funds interact with costs. Depending on the terms, trading fees, funding and losses may be deducted from the bonus first, from your own margin first or in a specific order. Read the bonus usage rules in the promotion details and the futures bonus section of the help centre before you hold a position across settlements. After the first funding interval, open the transaction or bill history in the futures account to see which balance was actually debited.
Checking real costs in your history
In the futures account, filter the history for funding fee entries. Each shows the contract, the amount and the time. Add them up for each position along with trading fees. Compare the total with the bonus amount you started with and with your own margin. If funding is regularly being paid from your own balance, the position is costing you real money, whatever the promotion says about trial funds.
Keeping a bonus position under control
Treat a bonus-funded position like any other: use modest leverage, set a stop and decide in advance how long you intend to hold it. Check the funding rate before each settlement if you plan to hold overnight, and close or reduce the position if the rate moves strongly against you. Remember that when the bonus expires or is used up, any open position is backed only by your own margin. Writing down the expiry date in your reward log avoids that surprise.
